Embedded Intelligence: SOTEC Elevates Wanzl’s “SlidingDoor” with Advanced Control Firmware

Wanzl, renowned in access and retail systems, sought to integrate sophisticated embedded control and security features into their next-generation SlidingDoor solution. SOTEC provided the specialized expertise in firmware engineering to transform the door’s elegant mechanics into a reliable, intelligent, and highly secure access system.

The Challenge

Wanzl aimed to create a highly advanced access solution integrating cutting-edge technology. This required state-of-the-art electronics for infrastructure security, intelligent system control and management, and robust reliability essential for demanding, high-traffic environments such as retail, fitness studios, and corporate entrances.

The core technical challenge was the development of sophisticated firmware capable of:

  • Governing precise engine control for flawless mechanical operation.
  • Integrating complex sensor data in real-time for safety and responsiveness.
  • Implementing robust, real-time security and anti-tampering logic.

The Solution

SOTEC’s embedded systems engineering team developed the comprehensive, custom firmware that serves as the door’s advanced control system. Our focus was on maximum reliability and embedding the intelligence necessary to deliver Wanzl’s vision.

The key aspects of our solution included:

  • Precision Engine Control and Performance We developed the core engine control firmware to ensure quiet, efficient, and safe passage. This system precisely manages the opening and closing sequences, facilitating smooth, dependable operation by continuously adapting to mechanical deviations and environmental influences.
  • Intelligent Sensor Data Processing The firmware receives and acts upon input signals from the door’s independent sensor management system (radars and light barriers). This critical data translation enables precise door movement operations, including automated opening on approach, continuous travel path monitoring for collision prevention, and immediate reverse detection with alarming.
  • Integrated Security and Anti-Tampering Embedded logic ensures robust security through a door leaf tampering detection which triggers alarms and automatically resets the door to a secure state if forcibly impeded.
  • Operational Modes and Connectivity The system’s intelligence supports varied use cases with features such as two-directional passage, configurable opening modes, and clear user communication via LEDs and audible signals. The firmware is also built for seamless integration with broader platforms, including “wanzl connect”.

The Result

The collaboration between SOTEC and Wanzl successfully elevated the SlidingDoor into an intelligent, highly responsive, and robust access solution. The sophisticated firmware delivered by SOTEC powers both the advanced engine control and a comprehensive suite of smart features, creating a product characterized by:

  • Maximum operational reliability and safety.
  • Enhanced infrastructure security through embedded anti-tampering logic.
  • A modern, intuitive user experience with clear feedback and diverse operational modes.
